Budget-Safe AI Video: Draft Cheap, Finish Once
A cost-control workflow for AI video ads: learn each model's prompt syntax, iterate at low resolution, fix instead of regenerate, then upscale the winner.
Goal
Cut the credits you burn per finished ad without lowering final quality.

The creator's example: 7 tries of a 10s shot cost far less iterating at 480p + upscaling than generating at 1080p every time (check current model pricing)
What you’ll make
Not an ad. This is a set of habits that apply to every playbook on this site. The source creator prompts AI video professionally and shares the cost math from real jobs.
Steps
- Feed your LLM the model’s official prompt guide. Each video model has its own syntax. For example, the source notes Seedance uses different bracket types for music, sound effects and dialogue. Paste the guide into Claude or ChatGPT and have it write prompts in that syntax.
- Iterate at low resolution. Do your tries at 480p. Only finish the approved take at full resolution, either by upscaling or by the model’s own draft-to-HD re-render if it has one.
- Rough out on a cheaper model. Block the shot on a budget model, then do the final on your premium model once the idea works.
- Lock the look with images. Some looks can’t be described, so show them with reference images. The source finds that giving the model reference images to assemble from often works better than handing it a complete start frame to animate.
- Fix, don’t regenerate. If one detail is wrong, edit that part with an image/video editing model instead of paying for a full new generation.
- Batch images, not videos. Generating several images at once is cheap; generating several videos at once to change one thing is not.
- Be specific. A clear positive description beats a long list of “don’t” instructions, which can also over-constrain the model.
- Keep your taste in the loop. The model executes; you direct.
Prompt templates
Here is the official prompting guide for [MODEL]: [paste].
Rewrite my shot description in that model's preferred syntax and structure.
Shot: [subject, action, setting, camera, lighting, audio].
Keep it under [N] words and avoid negative prompts unless essential.
Mistakes to avoid
- Generating at max resolution during exploration.
- Re-rolling an entire clip over a small flaw.
- Treating every model’s prompt format as the same.
